Greenhouses and glasshouses, are often used interchangeably to describe a glass structure within our gardens that grows plants, but how do greenhouses and glasshouses vary?
In this article Rhino Greenhouses Direct will answer the question, what is the difference between a greenhouse and a glasshouse and explore the functions of our Rhino Greenhouses.
What is a Glasshouse?
The dictionary defines a glasshouse as the following, “a large building with glass sides and roof for growing plants”. Glasshouses, utilise their glass structure to maximise the amount of sunlight to create a warm and humid environments for plants to thrive.
Traditionally Glasshouses have steeper roof pitches than that of a greenhouse, giving them a more ornate and aesthetic look to the space than a traditional greenhouse.
Glasshouses are often found in more commercial settings, used at botanical gardens and nurseries, due to Glasshouses being much larger than a greenhouse. For instance, Kew Gardens has the world’s largest Victorian glasshouse which holds over 1000 different species of plants from around the world.
What is a Greenhouse?
Similar to the definition of a glasshouse, a greenhouse is defined as the following, “a glass building in which plants that need protection from cold weather are grown.” But how do they vary? Well today, many greenhouses are not exclusively using glass for the structures, with many greenhouse designs opting to use plastic panels and coverings over the traditional use of glass.
